Flaaws
There always existed a need to beautify one’s home. Individualizing the space, adding unique accents is what makes us call the place our home. We aim to add details that can also distract us from the ugliness of the imperfections of residences. Many Poles are still confined to soviet-era flats: small, poor, identically furnished apartments in concrete blocks. They were built at a time of general scarcity. Consequently, there were no or very few decorations - the only prevailing symbol of luxury and social status were crystal glass vessels. It played an important role in Polish interior design culture. Not only serving a pragmatic value (as glasses, carafes, plates), they were used as decorations on all-present wall units. We believe that the imperfections of those flats have value that comes from their stories. By highlighting the shortcomings of ill-considered architecture, we want to show that the flaws can become a beautiful element of the space around us if we give them context. While visiting the JULIA crystal glass factory, our attention was drawn to the dusty, unused spaces of the factory. There the crystal vessels, often waste from production, were scattered in a haphazard manner. Crystal in the smelter is treated negligibly as a bulk material - radically different from treasure status it gains when taken home. The juxtaposition of these beautiful objects with the neglected corners of the factory, completely changed their character. To change the perspective of what is valuable, and to understand beauty in a perverse way, we have created an ornament covering a hole in a ceiling. We have created a tailor-made steel cover, organically shaped by KUKA robot, and elevated its form and meaning by adding crystal elements.
