Indicating water

Bioindicators, (or biological indicators) are organisms and elements that allow us to read and monitor environmental changes. In these times of fragile ecosystems, these indicators around us can become tools for understanding the impact of human activities on the ecosystem. In the 'Indicating water' project, the focus is on wetland bio-indicators. The installation, consisting of a dozen objects placed around the Kampinos Forest, visually marks macroinvertebrates, waterside plants and signs on trees. In telling the story of the wetlands, the project seeks to narrate from their perspective. Explaining the aftermath of the Anthropocene epoch, it focuses on the studying changes and dependencies that are occuring in wetlands in the context of the relationship between man and nature. The author analyses the area surrounding Truskaw, located within the borders of the Kampinos Forest, as an example of an anthropogenically endangered area where wetlands are subject to negative changes. Drawing on literary texts, scientific articles and maps, she looks at the boundaries of the human and non-human worlds and seeks to bring them closer together by creating bonds of kinship and coexistence with other species. Conducting field research and interviews with villagers, she proposes observation as a design tool as well as to learn about habitats and understand the changes taking place within them. By using materials that are strongly associated with negative human activity on the environment, including suburbanisation, and introducing them into non-human spaces, she gives them a new use and changes their context.

The project was created in collaboration with the Kampinos National Park.
